Mr. Evangelista is a 1984 graduate of The Wharton School of Business of The University of Pennsylvania and holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics, Concentration in Accounting. He joined MBAF as a Principal in December 2017. He has over 30 years’ experience advising and auditing ERISA benefit plans. At MBAF his responsibilities include management and supervision of audit, accounting and tax clients in the public and private sector, including Employee Benefit Plans, Labor Unions, Non-Profit Organizations, Individuals, Corporations and Partnerships. Mr. Evangelista is also a leader in MBAF's Litigation Support, Forensic & Fraud practice.
Mr. Evangelista is licensed in the States of New York and New Jersey, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA), and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (IFEBP). Throughout his career he has been an active leader in the accounting profession at the national, state, and local level, with a particular focus on Employee Benefit Plans and issues. He is also a member of the AICPA's Forensic and Valuation Services Section (formerly the Business Valuation and Forensic and Litigation Services Section).
In March 2008 U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao appointed Mr. Evangelista to the Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefit Plans, also known as the ERISA Advisory Council, for a three-year term ending in 2010. Mr. Evangelista was appointed by the AICPA in 2003 to the initial Executive Committee of the AICPA Employee Benefit Plan (EBP) Audit Quality Center, established by the AICPA to improve the overall quality of Employee Benefit Plan audits, on which he served until 2007. Mr. Evangelista is a past-Chair of the IFEBP's Financial Review Committee (2013-2015) and served as an Advisory Director on its Board of Directors (2013-2016). He has served previous terms on the IFEBP's Professionals, Accountants, and Financial Review Committees. Mr. Evangelista is a past Co-Chairperson and Speaker of the AICPA Annual National Employee Benefit Plans Conference and the co-founder and past Chairman of the AICPA's Annual Benefit Plans and DOL Update Conference. Currently Mr. Evangelista is serving as a member of the AICPA’s Task Force to develop a new Multiemployer Plan chapter in the AICPA Audit & Accounting Guide for Employee Benefit Plans. He has previously held positions on the AICPA National Employee Benefit Plans Committee and its various Task Forces, the AICPA National Employee Benefit Plans Government Plans Resources Task Force, as well as the AICPA Virtual Grassroots Panel (formerly the Group of 100). He has also been a frequent speaker at the IFEBP's Annual National Employee Benefit Conference, Trustees and Administrators Institutes, New Trustees Institute, Accounting and Auditing Institute (f/k/a Benefit Plan Professionals Institute), and Construction Industry Benefits Conference, as well at the IFEBP's Collection Procedures, Fraud, Investment, and Apprenticeship, Training, and Education Programs Institutes, and has also spoken at the American Bar Association Joint Committee on Employee Benefits/AICPA Invitational Conference.
He served on the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Accounting Education (FAE) of the NYSSCPA from 2013 to 2019, and was President of FAE for 2016-2017, and is also currently the President and a Trustee of the NYSSCPA CPA PAC. He was previously elected by the membership as a Vice-President of the NYSSCPA for the 2012-2013 year. Mr. Evangelista is a past member of the NYSSCPA's Board of Directors (2002 to 2007) and a founder and the first President of its Rockland County Chapter, and has also served on the NYSSCPA Finance, Nominating, and Award Committees. He is a former member of the Internal Revenue Service Exempt Organizations Liaison Group, Brooklyn, New York Key District, the NYSSCPA's Public School Accounting and Auditing Committee, and the 20th Congressional District Economic Advisory Committee.
Mr. Evangelista currently serves as Assistant to the Director and Coordinator of Press Relations/Operations for the Penn Relays Carnival (the World's oldest and largest Track & Field Relay Carnival). He has also previously served on the Board of Directors of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation (Suffern, NY), as past Vice-Chair and past Treasurer of the Board of Trustees of Rockland Community College (Suffern, NY), and as a former member of the Executive Board of the Rockland Community College Foundation. He was the first Chairman of the Advisory Board of the National Academy of Finance at North Rockland High School (Thiells, NY), and has previously served as the Co-Chairperson of the University of Pennsylvania Rockland and Orange Counties (NY) Secondary Schools Committee and on the Board of Directors of the University of Pennsylvania Westchester/Rockland (NY) Alumni Chapter.
Mr. Evangelista is an Eagle Scout. He resides in Stony Point, NY with his wife, Margret Jonsson Evangelista, an attorney in private practice.
